Exhaust configurations for propulsion systems.
Soundown exhaust silencing technology is configurable to almost any propulsion system or vessel layout. With a number of configuration possibilities, Soundown can design and build a complete exhaust system that includes muffler, riser, exhaust tubing and connections to create class leading acoustic performance.
Our design process starts with a review of the engine specifications and vessel layout to determine the size and configuration of the silencer and the layout of the piping. Once the routing has been determined, we optimize the silencer for the acoustic signature, exhaust gas flow, cooling water flow and other specifications of the engine.
Soundown’s exhaust department can provide a wide range of support, including parts specifications and reviews of your drawings, if we’re brought in early enough in the build process. We can provide 2-D and 3-D renderings, technical requirements and back pressure calculations as needed.

Here are some typical configurations. Items highlighted in color below are available through Soundown:
This configuration shows a basic axial waterdrop silencer with a riser.
This classic waterdrop configuration makes better use of vertical space with a slightly more sophisticated implementation.
This configuration shows two silencers  attached to an underwater exhaust to reduce the total low frequency noise from the engines. Noise travels in the gas plumes (bubbles) that are released, and reconnects with the hull bottom. The energy transmitted back into the hull by these impacts then radiates throughout the vessel. Installing a tower muffler before the cowl reduces this effect
Although a tower is typically situated against the hull side, this illustration shows a flying tower above the engine to conform to space constraints (still releasing exhaust through the side of the hull). This application is often used in vessels like catamarans, where space is tight and narrow, but comparatively tall. Call Soundown to find out if a configuration like this would work for your vessel.
